Bethel Baptist Church
Bethel Baptist Church was organized in the early 1870s by "colored
citizens of Amissville". The first pastor was reported to have
been Rev. Vincent Casey. In 1911, Henry Gales, Woodson Davenport,
and Oscar Roots were deeded 1/2 acre of land from W. N. & Mae
Cunningham of Fauquier County. In 1926, Woodson Davenport, Robert
Thompson, James Phillips, C.S. Williams, Wesley Phillips, and Lambert
Jackson paid $438.75 to P. A. and Virginia Hughes for 3.9 acres
of land on the opposite (west) side of Viewtown Road (site of the
present church) from where the original church stood.
